Nervous System Regulation: Somatic therapy supports clients in developing tools for nervous system regulation to help you be able to navigate and have more agency and control over the tough moments in life. This results in an overall reduction in stress and a greater feeling of empowerment.
Integrative Interventions for Whole-Person Healing: Our therapists combine somatic therapy with complementary modalities, such as EMDR, ACT, parts work and others, to create a well-rounded treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals.
What to Expect During Somatic Therapy Sessions
Somatic therapy is a collaborative, step-by-step process designed to meet you where you are.
Here’s what you can expect:
-
We begin with a conversation to understand your goals and concerns, and answer any questions you have about therapy or somatic work. We can do this over phone or video chat, or arrange a time for you to come into the office.
-
Your therapist will spend time getting to know you, including a bit about your history and what you’d like to work on. You’ll learn about the role of the nervous system and begin to be curious around how your own nervous system currently functions. You’ll learn and practice ways to access positive resources and leave with tools to support you immediately outside of session. Your therapist will also guide you through exercises to increase access to positive, neutral and uncomfortable sensations, in a gentle way, at your own pace. You’ll begin to notice and have more understanding around your physiological responses, triggers/activation points, and other body cues, which often leads to greater ability to navigate difficulties in the moment, as well as have more access to joy, creativity and connection.
-
Building on the skills you learned during the first sessions, your therapist will work with you to identify how your body is storing old survival responses and traumatic stress, which is leading to the symptoms you are experiencing. This process is gentle and organic, following the cues of the body. There is no hands on touch during this process. Clients report noticing quick shifts, and often experiencing symptom relief quickly.
-
We keep an open dialogue with you throughout therapy sessions, discussing which modalities we are integrating with your somatic work and ensuring that your treatment plan evolves with your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
A somatic therapist focuses on the connection between the mind and body, helping clients understand and learn how to work with their nervous system functioning and responses. Somatic therapies support clients in releasing tension and traumatic stress stored in their nervous system from past experiences. At Live Full Therapy in Nashville, our somatic therapists are trained in both Somatic Experiencing and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, approaches that work with the body to gently address symptoms. Your therapist helps create a safe and supportive environment where you can explore your experiences from an embodied place, and engage with the wisdom of the nervous system to process trauma and stressful experiences.
-
Life Full Therapy is not in network with insurance companies. Many of our clients are able to access out of network benefits through their insurance company, meaning you pay the cost of therapy up front, and then are reimbursed a portion of your therapy costs. We recommend reaching out to your insurance company to see if this is an option for you, and we are happy to talk more about this if you have questions.

Somatic therapy is for anyone seeking to address the mind-body connection in their healing journey. It can be especially helpful for individuals experiencing anxiety, trauma, chronic stress, or physical symptoms related to emotional pain, such as tension or fatigue. Somatic therapy is also effective for those who want to deepen their self-awareness and improve emotional regulation. At Live Full Therapy in Nashville, our compassionate therapists tailor sessions to meet your unique needs, whether you’re healing from past experiences or looking to cultivate greater resilience and balance in your life.

While both EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and somatic therapies are effective for healing trauma and emotional distress, they work in different ways. EMDR focuses on reprocessing distressing memories using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, to reduce their emotional intensity. Somatic therapy, on the other hand, works by learning to recognize how their nervous system is responding and gently engaging with their sensations and emotions from an embodied place. Somatic therapy is often described as a gentler approach and accessing specific memories is not typically necessary. At Live Full Therapy, our therapists often combine these two approaches to create a holistic treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
-
The cost of somatic therapy depends on factors such as session length, therapist credentials, and whether someone has out of network benefits that can cover a portion of the cost. At Live Full Therapy, we strive to make our services accessible while providing high-quality, compassionate care. We also offer a free 20-minute consultation to help you determine if somatic therapy is the right fit for your needs and discuss pricing and payment options with you.
